Don Matschull

I have spent decades studying and working with horses. I've taken lessons, attended clinics, read extensively on the subject of horses and riding, and put in thousands of hours riding hundreds of different horses. I ridden horses of many different breeds as well as many of no particular breed at all. I've helped move cattle over the Continental Divide in the Western United States as well as doing High School movements on Lusitano stalions in Portugal. I've spent many hours in the arena, but I've also gone on wilderness horse pack trips along narrow mountain trails through fields, forests, and above the tree line.

Through my various experiences, I've learned that horses are very giving animals. Although they will usually attempt to do what is demanded of them, they respond better to guidance and suggestion than to force. I have seen my methods of riding work with students of all ages and experience. I helped new riders overcome fears of dealing with large, powerful animals and seen experienced riders' eyes light up when they've discovered that they don't have to fight with a horse to get it to do what they want.

Although I reserve the rights to the text and images on this site, I encourage you to try and to share the methods described here. I also encourage you to read my book which goes into more detail about the things I have learned.
